Redemption by Karen Kingsbury

When I did my book giveaway last year I asked for a book recommendation and this was given to me by numerous people so I thought I’d pick it up. I’m learning quickly that a lot of people that entered my giveaway really enjoyed Christian fiction. I do too, but I just haven’t read a whole lot of it until recently. I’m used to reading shocking contemporary literature that is focused on anything but religion and faith in God, but sometimes a nice mild Christian lit novel is a welcome change. Redeemed was one of those. I’d just finished reading Tenth Circle before this one and even though some of the themes (sex, violence) are the same, there is something so different about this novel.

The basic synopsis is a young married woman gets the shock of her life when she finds out her husband has been having an affair with one of his students. When she catches him, even more shocking to her, is that he doesn’t want to be married anymore. He wants a divorce. Rather than give him the divorce, she pulls on her faith in God to get her through the trials and hopefully restore her marriage.

There is a lot more to it than that, but that’s the basic plotline. I was worried because the storyline sounded a little cheesy, but the book was very well written and a good balance of religion and worldly pleasures. It is also the beginning of a series, which I didn’t know, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book to see what eventually happens to the woman. I’m not sure I would have the strength to make the same choices as she did but at least Kingsbury showed her struggles along with her achievements. She also touches on a new dimension of love- letting someone go. It well-written and definitely worth reading.
