Phantom of the Opera Giveaway (Closed)

ENTER TO WIN A COPY OF THE LONGEST-RUNNING BROADWAY MUSICAL OF ALL TIME CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF ROMANCE WITH A SPECTACULAR LIVE PRODUCTION ON ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST LEGENDARY STAGES

Take This Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience Home and Win a Blu-ray!

Broadway’s longest-running production of all time celebrates a triumphant quarter century on stage with THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL, coming to Blu-ray – with perfect hi-def picture and perfect hi-def sound – DVD, On Demand and Digital Download on February 7, 2012 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. On October 2, 2011, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh marked the 25th anniversary of their beloved musical extravaganza, “The Phantom of the Opera,” with a lavishly staged production at London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall that was beamed live via satellite to cinemas across the globe. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL, marks the first time a live performance of the blockbuster musical has been made available for home viewing, making it a must-have anniversary release for fans everywhere.

The Phantom of the Opera is undoubtedly a classic musical that many people would insist is a must‐see. To celebrate the release of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL on Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand on February 7, we will highlight ten other musicals that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime, including Fiddler on the Roof, Les Misérables, and Wicked.

Fiddler on the Roof
Fiddler on the Roof is a Tony Award® winning musical which originally appeared on Broadway in 1964. Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof is set in pre-revolutionary Russia, and tells the story of a poor Jewish peasant who must contend with marrying off his three daughters while anti-Semitic sentiment threatens his home. This classic musical has been a critical darling for nearly 50 years, and includes popular songs like "Tradition," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "If I Were A Rich Man" and "Sunrise, Sunset." Fiddler on the Roof is currently touring nationally, but if you miss a show in your city, you can always rent the fantastic 1971 film version staring Topol as Tevye.

Les Miserables
Les Misérables made its debut London’s West End over 25 years ago, and has had an incredibly successful run throughout the world since then. Les Mis, as it is affectionately known among fans, is the tale of Jean Valjean, a Frenchman imprisoned for stealing bread, who must flee a police officer named Javert. The pursuit consumes both men's lives, and soon Valjean finds himself in the midst of the student revolutions in France. Les Mis has been translated into 21 languages, has played in 41 countries, and been seen by more than 55 million people! Les Mis is currently touring the US, and a big screen adaptation of the musical is set to hit theaters this year.

Wicked
After a successful trial run in San Francisco, Wicked opened on Broadway in 2003. Since then, this adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel has won 35 major awards, become a favorite of fans and critics, and received widespread attention from the use of its songs and sets on the hit TV show “Glee.” Wicked is the story of the witches of Oz, told long before Dorothy and Toto came along. Wicked tells the story of how the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good came to be, and includes some breathtaking songs, including “Defying Gravity.” You can currently see Wicked on Broadway, or on its national tour.

West Side Story
West Side Story debuted in 1957, and is a musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet set in New York City. In it, rival street gangs (the Jets and the Sharks) battle for territory and respect. But when the Jets’ former leader, Tony, falls in love with Maria, the sister of the Sharks’ leader, the unlikely couple is forced to choose between love and their obligations. Aside from being adapted into a fantastic musical film in 1961, West Side Story has won countless theater awards, been adapted to be performed as a ballet, and boasts some of the most memorable dances and songs in the history of Broadway, including “America,” “I Feel Pretty,” “Maria” and “Something’s Coming.” The production is currently touring nationally.

A Chorus Line
Simply put, A Chorus Line is a 1975 musical about Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line in a large-scale production. This is the story of young, hopefully dancers looking for their big break. Since it’s debut in 1975, A Chorus Line has toured the world and become a widely recognized and revered musical theater institution. A Chorus Line has won a myriad of awards, including nine Tony’s, and is the longest running American Broadway Musical of all time. The production completed a national tour in 2011, so you may want to check out the 1985 film adaptation.

A Little Shop of Horrors
1982’s Little Shop of Horrors was actually an off-Broadway musical based on the 1960 film of the same name. The musical, which tells the story of a meek flower shop assistant who happens upon a man-eating plant (which he names “Audrey II” after his co-worker and crush, Audrey), was turned into a hilarious movie musical Starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene and Steve Martin in 1986. Little Shop is one of the longest running off-Broadway musicals, and finally saw a Broadway debut in 2003. This quirky musical uses a series of puppets to show Audrey II’s growth and features many different styles of music, a Greek chorus, and a demented dentist.

Hair
HAIR, the first great rock musical, opened on Broadway in 1968 and tells the story of a group of friends choosing to sing out in celebration of love, life and freedom. HAIR features some of Broadway’s most infectious songs, including "Let the Sun Shine In," “Good Morning Starshine," "Aquarius" and "Hair." This musical is notable for many reasons, among them the controversy that has surrounded the production, mainly due to its inclusion of a nude scene. HAIR is currently touring the US, but if you can’t make it out to a show, the 1979 film adaptation is a suitable substitution for the live show.

Avenue Q
The hilarious musical Avenue Q opened on Broadway in 2003 following a successful off-Broadway stint. This Tony Award-winning musical tells the story of a recent college grad who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets many colorful characters that help him discover the meaning in his life. Avenue Q is known for being “part flesh, part felt” and for its outrageous content, including songs like “The Internet Is For Porn” and “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist.” Avenue Q has successfully toured the US and is currently playing off-Broadway in New York.

Hairspray
Hairspray is based on the 1988 film of the same name, and it debuted on Broadway in 2002. Hairspray tells the story of an overweight teenager living in Baltimore in the ‘60s whose dream is to be a dancer on a local “American Bandstand”-type show. Hairspray has successfully toured the United States, won eight Tony Awards, and inspired the 2007 movie musical of the same name. Hairspray’s live shows often feature famous faces in the cast, Matthew Morrison, Nick Jonas, and Ashley Angel Parker.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Another of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical theater gems, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat opened on Broadway in 1982 after a successful start in the UK. Joseph is often produced by schools and colleges, and is (in most productions) completely devoid of dialogue, technically making it an opera. The show’s story is taken from the Bible, and follows Joseph, the favorite son of Jacob, through his incredible life including time as a slave in Egypt and working as the Pharaoh’s right hand man. Some notable pop stars including Donny Osmond, Jason Donovan and Lee Mead have played the title character. The 1999 film version staring Donny Osmond as Joseph is a fairly accurate representation of the stage show if you are unable to find a production in your area.

In order to win your very own copy of The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall on Blu-ray, simply answer the following question:

Who produced THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL?

A. Cameron Mackintosh
B. David Merrick
C. Barry and Fran Weisler

GIVEAWAY: Hot Chocolate by Dawn Ireland (Closed)

This giveaway is closed and the lucky winner is....Margaret at singitm(at)hotmail(dot)com.

Chocolate, mystery, and murder…what else could a reader want from a book? Well, Dawn Ireland delivers that and more in her most recent book, “Hot Chocolate.” Centering on the Alcott daughters, heirs to the Alcott Chocolate fortune, “Hot Chocolate” begins as the sisters agree to move their 92-year-old father to a senior assisted living facility. They also agree to fire his nurse, Bambi, who resembles a hooker more than a caregiver. While Bambi departs without a fuss and graciously accepts her severance package, her husband, Jimmy Ray, does not go so quietly.

Demanding they sue the Alcott family, Jimmy Ray believes they have a slam-dunk case. However, the judge sees through their greed and quickly dismisses the frivolous suit. While the Alcotts celebrate their good fortune, some mysterious individual murders Jimmy Ray at his bowling alley. Bambi deals with her grief, and the Alcott sisters try to digest the latest discovery in Jimmy Ray’s murder: the murder weapon was a prized fork belonging to Dorothea Alcott.

As the murderer’s identity comes closer to being revealed, the reader is kept guessing along with the Alcotts at what will happen next. All the while, delicious dishes, such as Lila Mae’s famous café mocha and Amelia’s (Lila Mae’s housekeeper) chicken and corn gumbo, make appearances at pivotal moments in the plot. Ireland cleverly places all of these yummy recipes at the end of “Hot Chocolate” so that the reader can fully immerse themselves in the interesting world of the Alcotts. Certain to not disappoint, the Alcott sisters act as any siblings would: fighting, joking, and working together, with unique personalities and quirks. The mystery of Jimmy Rae’s murder will keep the reader guessing until the very end and certainly will provide laughs and gasps along the way.

Want to delve into the book and discover the murderer as well as try the scrumptious recipes? Reply to this post by midnight EST on Thursday, February 16 to win a free eBook copy of “Hot Chocolate.”

Giveaway: Hot Water by Erin Brockovich with CJ Lyons

Last year Erin Brockovich introduced readers to AJ Palladino in Rock Bottom as AJ returned home with her genius son David to Scotia, West Virginia where they were quickly involved in a disruption that ended in the death of David's dad Cole.

After struggling to make ends meet for so long, it looks like AJ's luck is finally going to change when the owner of a nuclear power plant, Grandel, gives her an offer that sounds too good to be true - a huge sum of money just to convince protestors that his plant is safe. Designed using brand new technology and methods to ensure safety and security, even the government has declared it a model plant. And the plant was safe until AJ got involved.

Hot Water is a thrilling journey of two parallel stories that twist and turn until they are combined into one. AJ is fighting the battle to restore order to the nuclear plant in the midst of religious fanatics and radioactive alligators while her family and friends are fighting a battle against David's grandfather to maintain custody of David. Add a great hit man, some fascinating supporting characters, and twists and turns I didn't see coming and yes, you have yourself a great read.

While this is a stand alone book, I would recommend that you read Rock Bottom before Hot Water just to understand the back story and how AJ and David's lives became as complicated as they are. I highly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good thriller, especially ones led by a feisty female heroine.

Want a copy for yourself? One lucky reader will win a copy of Hot Water just by commenting on this post.  Giveaway ends Friday, February 3rd at midnight EST.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion of the book.

Giveaway: Blu-Ray Copy of To Kill a Mockingbird 50th Anniversary Edition (Closed)

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD: Top Ten American Classics of Our Time

Digitally Remastered and Fully Restored with Over Three Hours of Bonus Materials Including Two Full Length Documentaries

On Limited Edition Collector’s Series Blu-ray™ Combo Pack,
Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, one of the screen’s most beloved and critically acclaimed films, celebrates its 50th anniversary with a commemorative Limited Edition Collector’s Series Blu-ray™ Combo Pack as well as on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment on January 31, 2012. The powerful and poignant adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel hits the half-century mark, digitally remastered and fully restored from high resolution 35MM original film elements, plus more than three-and-a-half hours of bonus features chronicling the making of the cinematic masterpiece.

Unquestionably an American classic, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is one of the most beloved films and novels of our time. In honor of its release on Blu-ray on January 31, we will take a look back at other classic books and movies that have helped define our nation over the last century.

THE GREAT GATSBY (1925)
Set on Long Island’s North Shore and in New York City during the Roaring Twenties, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is often cited as one of the best novels of the 20th century. The novel has spawned seven film adaptations, numerous book and graphic novel interpretations, stage productions, a BBC radio special, computer games and even an opera.

THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939)
Based on the 1900 children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, 1939’s The Wizard of Oz is adored by both children and adults the world over. This film is unique due to its early use of Technicolor, special effects, and bizarre characters, sets, costumes and makeup. Despite all of the love the film receives now, it was initially a financial failure, but rereleases have more than made up for its early disappointment.

THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1939)
John Steinbeck’s amazing novel The Grapes of Wrath won the Pulitzer Prize in 140, as well as the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. The novel is set during the Great Depression and focuses on a family trying to escape their bleak life in the wake of the Dust Bowl. This classic American novel has been the inspiration for a great film of the same name, a play, an opera and a song by Bruce Springsteen.

CITIZEN KANE (1941)
Starring and directed by Orson Welles, Citizen Kane is considered by many to be the absolute greatest American film ever made. The film is loosely based on the lives of both William Randolph Hearst and Welles himself. Citizen Kane is noted for its innovative cinematography and unique narrative structure, and was nominated for nine Academy Awards.

THE CATCHER IN THE RYE (1951)
J.D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye has become incredibly popular with teenagers over the past 60 years. The book focuses on angst, alienation and rebellion, and some of the content, like its use of profanity and sexuality, have made it frequently challenged and sometime banned by different governments. This novel has also been famously linked to numerous murders and crimes, most notably that of John Lennon by Mark David Chapman.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962)
The 1962 film adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird is often cited as one of the greatest films ever made. This film’s impact on American cinema is widespread, and it has received many honors over the past 50 years, including being preserved in the National Film Registry and winning three Academy Awards. Atticus Finch has often been cited as one of the greatest movie heroes, and Gregory Peck’s performance is widely considered to be one of the great performances in American film history.

IN COLD BLOOD (1966)
Truman Capote’s 1966 novel In Cold Blood detailed the 1959 murders of a Kansas farmer, his wife, and two of their children. This non-fiction work took Capote six years of work, researching the family, their community and their killers, Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, with his childhood friend (and author of To Kill a Mockingbird), Harper Lee. At the time, the book became the best selling crime novel.

THE GODFATHER (1972)
Based on a 1969 novel of the same name, 1972’s The Godfather is an epic American crime film, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The film won three Academy Awards, including Best Actor and Best Picture and helped revitalize Brando’s career. This stunning film also starred film greats Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton.

BELOVED (1987)
Set after the Civil War, Toni Morrison’s breathtaking 1987 novel Beloved is the story of an American slave who escaped slavery by fleeing to a free state with her children. After killing one of her children rather than sending her back into slavery, the woman and her family are haunted by the presence of the child’s ghost. Beloved won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988, and was adapted into a film staring Oprah Winfrey in 1998.

SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993)
1993’s Schindler’s List is a film about a German businessman who saved the lives of thousands of Jewish refugees during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. The film, directed by Steve Spielberg, won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Schindler’s List stars Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes.
