Reading in 2011: Paper or Plastic?

I'll just come out and say it - I love reading. I love getting lost in a good book, in a world that's not my own. And I love gadgets. I've got gadgets all over my kitchen, gadgets for running, gadgets for my computer, and anything else you could think of. But for some reason I just haven't joined in on the newest craze that combines reading and gadgets together - eBook readers.

After all of the interesting book reviews that I have to turn down because I don't have an eBook reader, it's really got me thinking about whether or not it's time for me to join in. And if I do join in and get a reader, how do I even begin to decide which one is the best one out there? This is one of those times I wish I could do a trial run because who knows, maybe I wouldn't love reading so much without the feeling of actually holding a book and turning the pages. Or maybe I would.

I know there are a lot of people out there who read this blog and are book lovers like me. How do you read your books? Have you joined in on the Kindle craze or are you sticking to paper?

  1. Two or three years ago I was given a Sony eReader for review on my blog. I liked it at first, but just couldn't get into it. Not only do I prefer the feel of a real book, at he time there wasn't much flexibility with the ebooks. Now you can trade them, share them, get free ones like crazy. I sold that eReader on ebay (got $200 for it!) but now I'm thinking anyone that wants to read actively won't be able to do so without one of these. And now the Kindle is only $114.

  2. I will ALWAYS love "real" books! But, I have to say that ereaders are fantastic! We have two, actually. I love that my son is using one for his Honors English class. They read A LOT in his class and most of it is classic literature which can be downloaded for free! And it's less weight in his already overloaded backpack.
I went to my favorite Mexican restaurant for lunch. I love to have lunch by myself and read. It's just so much easier with an ereader. I don't have to try to hold the book open and eat at the same time. Also, no worries about dripping salsa on the pages... not that I ever do that :D
I will never forsake the printed word. Ereaders are just complementary accessories!

  3. I have a Kobo (the Borders eReader) which I was able to get sort of cheap.

I'm not crazy about the thing, though I do find it convenient at times. I am reading a book on the Kobo, as well as my paper books and the series to which I'm listening on audio. I suppose that that's where the thing falls in the world ... it's another medium, but one that's more-welcome in my life than TV or such.

  4. I'm a big kindle fan, but I'll never give up the printed word. The kindle is great because it's easy to read on and commute 30-40 books. Although, it's kind of annoying when your book dies... that's the only down fall I have! LOL - I think you should do it!!! It's a great gadget to have :)

  5. I agonized over making the switch and researched like crazy. I have to say that I'm absolutely in love with my Kindle. It's easier to hold than a real book, I can get a new book in seconds (as opposed to waiting for the library, Amazon to mail it, or going to the store), and I love the "try it" feature (read a Chapter before buying). I'm glad I made the switch!

  6. I beg of you to go for a NookColor. Sorry kindle peeps, but it is SO much better. Other than the basics of more books to choose from, color conversion is better, internet access, and android market ready. It is so close to a tablet which makes blogging on it great too. (I have more info about it on my blog) But I totally love my nook. I use it for library books too.

  7. After much researching, I decided to get a Nook (just plain Nook, not color) and I love it! It helps me read MORE since I can rent e-books from my local library for free. I think buying e-books is overpriced since they're not always less than a physical paper copy, so renting from the library is a great alternative.

Of course I'll always love paper books, but I see myself reading less and less printed word as time goes on.
