Book Review: The Choice

Photobucket

Book Jacket:
Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loyal friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life-boating, swimming, and regular barbecues with his close buddies-he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is until Gabby Holland moves in next door.
Despite his attempts to be neighborly, the attractive redhead seems to have a grudge against him...and the presence of her longtime boyfriend doesn't help. Still, Travis can't stop trying to ingratiate himself with his new neighbor, and his persistent efforts lead them both to the doorstep of a journey that neither could have foreseen. Spanning the eventful years of young love, marriage, and family, THE CHOICE ultimately confronts us with the most heart-wrenching question of all: How far should you go to keep the hope of love alive?

I have a love-hate relationship with Nicholas Sparks books. I love his writing style; I love his characters; I hate the endings. Every one of his books have made me cry, but the endings have really upset me. Why do the people have to break up or die in every single book? What does he have against happy endings? It got to the point that I wouldn't read Nicholas Sparks books anymore. I was boycotting them for breaking my heart at the end every time.

This book was very much the typical Nicholas Sparks book. I really liked the characters, and even had a bit of a crush on Travis Parker, the main character. When he first tells Gabby he loves her, I cried. When I found out what choice Travis had to make, I cried. At the end of the book, I cried too. However, Nicholas Sparks has redeemed himself in my eyes. For once, I did not hate the ending. I loved it.

Book Review: Mermaids in the Basement

Photobucket

Michael Lee West's Mermaids in the Basement is about Renata DeChavannes, a southern girl dating a Hollywood movie director. While he is on location in Ireland, a picture of him in a compromising position with a man-eating actress is published in all the tabloids. Renata is so hurt that she travels to her hometown to have the support of her family while she is healing. During her visit, she discovers the truth about her parents' marriage and divorce, and it changes her life forever.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read with great character development. The juicy plot includes near-drownings, murder, extramarital affairs, poisonings, gossip, and revenge...but ultimately love & redemption.

Narration is mainly by our main character, Renata. However, some chapters are guest narrated. Other narrators include Renata's grandmother, childhood nanny, grandmother's best friend, father, and boyfriend.

The only negative for me was that when the book switched narrators, sometimes it didn't list in the chapter title whose perspective we were reading now. It took a few paragraphs to figure it out, and that drove me nuts. The offending chapters are 22, 24, 27, & 31.

It is definitely worth reading.
