Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis

I read the entire Chronicles of Narnia series two years ago, but I reread this one in anticipation of the movie coming out next month. From the previews, it looks great though they appear to have changed it somewhat. I'll have to wait and see to know for sure.

I can't tell you enough how I love this series (except for the final book, The Last Battle which just irks me). Prince Caspian may very well be my favorite, but it's hard to choose. It's the fourth book in most renditions of the series, but it was the second book written. The book that comes between The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and this one adds nothing to the plot as it takes place during the original rule of the 2 kings and 2 queens that we see in the end of the last book and hardly mentions the 4 kids at all.

In Prince Caspian, the Pevensie kids get called back to Narnia one year later England time, hundreds of years later Narnia time. The place they originally land at is the ruins of their very own castle. They come to find out that a wicked man, King Miraz, has taken the throne that rightfully belongs to Prince Caspian the Tenth. The Old Narnians (all the creatures that are mentioned in the first book) attempt to help the Prince take back his throne. The children must help Caspian in this failing endeavor.

My favorite part of this book is Lucy's interactions with Aslan, who is the type of Christ. Their relationship has changed somewhat as she is no longer a little child and he helps her to understand that.

Oh, and a little snippet that you might find entertaining:

"That's the worst of girls," said Edmund to Peter and the Dwarf. "They
never carry a map in their heads."

"That's because our heads have something inside them," said Lucy.

I encourage anyone who is planning to see the movie to read or reread this book. It's short but quite a pleasant read, as is the rest of the series!

  1. I read the series several time when I was little (and I do mean little, I was 6 or 7, an early reader). But most of it was way over my head. The one that grabbed me the most was The Magician's Nephew. I've been wanting to reread them.

  2. Like Marie, I read them waaay back in elementary school, along with the Screwtape Letters. But I love that they are making all of them into movies! The first was really well done, and I am looking forward to seeing this one.

Oh wait....we are talking about the book...

    Great book!

  3. I loved rereading this series after the first movie came out. It's amazing to go through now when we understand enough and enjoy the Christian symbolism. It's a completely different series now. .
