Book Review: Mermaids in the Basement

Photobucket

Michael Lee West's Mermaids in the Basement is about Renata DeChavannes, a southern girl dating a Hollywood movie director. While he is on location in Ireland, a picture of him in a compromising position with a man-eating actress is published in all the tabloids. Renata is so hurt that she travels to her hometown to have the support of her family while she is healing. During her visit, she discovers the truth about her parents' marriage and divorce, and it changes her life forever.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read with great character development. The juicy plot includes near-drownings, murder, extramarital affairs, poisonings, gossip, and revenge...but ultimately love & redemption.

Narration is mainly by our main character, Renata. However, some chapters are guest narrated. Other narrators include Renata's grandmother, childhood nanny, grandmother's best friend, father, and boyfriend.

The only negative for me was that when the book switched narrators, sometimes it didn't list in the chapter title whose perspective we were reading now. It took a few paragraphs to figure it out, and that drove me nuts. The offending chapters are 22, 24, 27, & 31.

It is definitely worth reading.
